Raising fuel prices is often proposed as a tool to kerb air pollution by discouraging excessive driving. I partly disagree with the claim that it is the only effective method, because pollution arises from multiple sources and behaviours. While pricing mechanisms can influence demand, an exclusive focus on fuel costs ignores structural and technological solutions that can deliver cleaner air more equitably and reliably.

Fuel taxation can reduce emissions by making private car use less attractive, particularly for short and unnecessary trips. In my experience of commuting in a large city, higher petrol costs encouraged car sharing and a noticeable reduction in casual journeys. However, such measures disproportionately affect low-income workers who lack realistic transport alternatives, which limits public acceptance and weakens their long-term impact.

More comprehensive approaches can achieve greater reductions without relying solely on price signals. Investments in reliable public transport, safe cycling infrastructure, and incentives for electric vehicles have improved air quality in places where I live by shifting travel habits sustainably. In addition, stricter emission standards for industry and urban planning measures that reduce commute distances tackle pollution closer to its source.

In conclusion, increasing fuel prices can contribute to lowering air pollution, but it is neither the only nor the most effective solution. A balanced strategy combining pricing, infrastructure investment, regulation, and cleaner technology addresses diverse causes while remaining socially fair. Therefore, I disagree with the claim to a large extent.
