Participation in extracurricular activities is sometimes perceived as a distraction from formal learning. Nevertheless, I strongly agree that such involvement is equally important for schoolchildren and university students, because it complements academic study by cultivating abilities that examinations alone cannot assess.

For schoolchildren, extracurricular participation supports cognitive and social growth at a formative stage of development. Activities such as sports teams, music ensembles, or debate clubs foster discipline, collaboration, and effective time management, which directly enhance classroom behaviour and sustained concentration. For instance, a child who regularly trains for a sport learns to set goals and cope with failure, skills that translate into more resilient attitudes towards tests and homework. Consequently, academic achievement is strengthened rather than compromised.

At university level, involvement beyond lectures is equally valuable, though for somewhat different reasons. As academic content becomes increasingly specialised, employers place greater emphasis on transferable skills, including leadership, communication, and problem-solving ability. Student societies, volunteering, and internships enable undergraduates to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. Although it is sometimes argued that university students should focus solely on grades, balanced engagement often results in higher motivation and a clearer sense of professional direction.

In conclusion, extracurricular activities should not be regarded as secondary to academic success at any educational stage. Instead, they enhance learning outcomes by nurturing essential personal and intellectual capacities that support both examinations and long-term development.
