The issue of whether a competitive environment in schools or universities is beneficial remains widely debated. Academic competition can motivate students to achieve higher standards, yet it may also generate stress and unhealthy comparison. In my view, a competitive setting is generally positive when it is balanced with collaboration and institutional support.

The main advantage of competition is that it encourages effort, discipline, and goal orientation. When students are aware that performance is measured and compared, they are more likely to manage time effectively and practise consistently. During my undergraduate studies, graded class rankings pushed me to prepare thoroughly for assessments, which improved both my subject knowledge and study habits. As a result, competition functioned as a clear incentive rather than a threat.

However, excessive competition can undermine learning by prioritising grades over understanding. In some courses I attended, constant comparison created anxiety and discouraged students from sharing ideas or helping peers. This atmosphere weakened collaboration and reduced confidence among average performers. Such outcomes suggest that competition becomes harmful when it is poorly regulated or linked too closely to self-worth.

Overall, a competitive academic environment is beneficial only when moderated by fair assessment and opportunities for teamwork. My experience shows that competition can drive excellence, but without balance it risks harming motivation and well-being. Therefore, educational institutions should promote healthy competition alongside collaboration.
