The purpose of education is widely debated, particularly whether it should prioritise economic and social preparation or individual self-fulfilment. In my view, education should primarily equip learners to contribute effectively to the workforce and society, while also supporting personal growth as a complementary outcome rather than the central aim.

Preparing students for employment and civic responsibility is essential for social stability and economic development. Education provides foundational skills such as literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and collaboration, which enable individuals to participate productively in modern labour markets. For example, structured curricula and vocational pathways help students acquire competencies that employers require, reducing unemployment and skills shortages. Moreover, education shapes behaviour, ethics, and social awareness, producing responsible citizens who can engage constructively in democratic processes and community life.

Admittedly, self-fulfilment is an important dimension of learning, as motivation and personal interests enhance engagement and creativity. Subjects such as the arts, humanities, and independent research allow students to explore identity and purpose. However, if education focuses predominantly on personal satisfaction, it risks neglecting shared societal needs and widening inequality, since self-directed learning benefits those with greater resources and guidance. A balanced system can foster fulfilment within frameworks that maintain academic standards and social relevance.

In conclusion, education should prioritise preparing individuals for work and social participation, while integrating opportunities for self-fulfilment. This approach best serves both individual potential and collective progress.
