Rising unemployment is often linked to weak job creation, and rapid urbanisation is frequently proposed as a solution because cities concentrate investment and labour demand. However, I disagree that it is the only effective approach. While urban expansion can absorb workers, treating it as a singular remedy ignores structural, educational, and regional factors that drive joblessness.

Urbanisation can reduce unemployment by generating construction work, expanding service industries, and improving access to markets. For example, new transport and housing projects create immediate jobs and later attract firms needing dense consumer bases. These effects can be significant, particularly in developing economies, but they are time-bound and unevenly distributed.

More importantly, unemployment persists where skills mismatch, automation, and rural decline are ignored, problems urban growth alone cannot solve. Investment in education and vocational training raises employability across regions, while support for small enterprises and digital infrastructure creates jobs without mass migration. Such measures stabilise labour markets and prevent the social costs of overcrowded cities.

In conclusion, rapid urbanisation can contribute to employment growth, but it is neither universally effective nor sufficient on its own. A balanced strategy combining urban development with skills formation, regional investment, and innovation is more resilient. Therefore, I disagree with the claim that urbanisation is the only effective way to tackle unemployment.
