The popularity of bottled water stems from portability and reliability, particularly where tap supplies are uncertain. Although plastic waste creates serious environmental harm, I largely disagree that an outright ban on bottled water is the best response, because convenience and public health requirements can be met while reducing damage through smarter controls.

First, bottled water serves practical and safety functions that alternatives cannot always replace. Travellers, disaster victims, and commuters often require sealed water that is immediately available and hygienic. In regions with ageing pipes or contamination scares, bottled water provides short-term assurance, and banning it could push consumers towards sugary drinks, undermining health outcomes and increasing overall packaging waste.

Nevertheless, critics are right that plastic bottles contribute to pollution, landfill pressure, and marine damage. However, these impacts arise mainly from weak waste management and an excessive single-use culture rather than the product itself. Measures such as deposit-return schemes, higher recycling targets, and incentives for refillable containers can sharply cut plastic leakage while preserving access to bottled water when it is genuinely needed.

In conclusion, while environmental concerns are valid, banning bottled water is a blunt solution that ignores practical realities. A balanced approach that regulates production, prices environmental costs, and strengthens recycling systems would protect ecosystems more effectively without removing a convenient and sometimes essential resource.
