Nowadays, environmental problems increasingly transcend national borders, making unilateral action by individual countries insufficient. Problems such as climate change, ocean pollution and biodiversity loss are driven by interconnected economic systems and shared ecosystems. I strongly agree that effective protection of the environment now requires international collaboration, although domestic action by nations remains a necessary foundation.

First, the main drivers of environmental harm operate globally and demand aligned rules across countries. Greenhouse gas emissions, shipping waste and deforestation are shifted between nations through trade and finance. Consequently, without common standards, individual countries face incentives to free ride at the expense of the shared environment. Indeed, international agreements synchronise targets, pool scientific expertise and reduce competitive disadvantage, as joint monitoring improves emissions transparency and holds nations accountable.

Second, many solutions to environmental issues require scale, funding and technology that exceed the capacity of any single nation. For instance, climate adaptation, renewable energy grids and the conservation of migratory species benefit from environmental investment shared across nations. Admittedly, critics argue that local behaviour by people is decisive, yet isolated efforts are undermined when neighbouring countries pollute or relocate production. By contrast, collaboration strengthens national policies by harmonising carbon pricing and channelling funds toward poorer nations that struggle to protect their environment.

Furthermore, government money invested in earth exploration, improved living standards and a better environment is used far more efficiently when nations pool resources rather than duplicate them. In conclusion, although individuals and governments must act at home, the decisive leverage over environmental problems lies beyond borders, because the transboundary nature of these issues makes international collaboration indispensable for credible protection of the global environment.
