Transcript:
Negativity bias refers to the psychological phenomenon where humans tend to focus more on negative emotions or experiences than positive ones. Although we experience positive emotions like contentment and pleasure more frequently, these feelings tend to be lighter in intensity and are less likely to be remembered or linger in our minds. On the other hand, negative emotions such as fear, anger, or sadness, although less frequent, tend to be much stronger and more intense, making them easier to recall and harder to forget. This bias has evolutionary significance. In the past, paying more attention to negative events like threats or dangers would have been advantageous for survival. By being more sensitive to potential threats—whether from predators, environmental hazards, or social conflicts—humans could respond quickly to life-threatening situations. This heightened awareness of negative stimuli would have helped our ancestors make decisions that favored safety and survival. In today's world, while the immediate life-threatening threats may have diminished, the negativity bias still plays a role in how we assess situations, sometimes leading us to focus on potential risks or problems rather than opportunities or positive outcomes. Understanding this bias can help us manage our reactions and potentially shift our focus towards a more balanced perspective.
