We have done a social science research on capacity of families and found this compelling and disturbing fact. The most disturbing thing to me is that well- educated parents can always promise their children a prosperous future because these children have sufficient educational capacity and support since they were born. The life chance of a child was set when they were five years old. Well, this finding has been quite disturbing to me. And, I have to confess that currently there is no obvious way to address this deep root of inequality in our society. Even public schools cannot completely offset the huge gaps brought by different family backgrounds for vulnerable children. It reminds us that early-stage conditions play an enormous role in shaping the life chance of every individual.
