Larval phase

One of the main reasons is that most marine organisms, even where the adult may never move its entire life, will have a larval phase of pelagic larval phase, and during that phase that little, that little beast can move over very great distances. Sometimes they don't move at all, but they certainly have the capacity to move thousands of kilometres. You combine that with powerful ocean currents, and you can see you've got a recipe for long distance connection. This phenomenon is especially evident in situations where you have very powerful Pollard flowing boundary currents. It's the characteristic of oceanography. These currents then can carry tropical larvae in into very high latitudes and temperate regions, and so wherever you see these currents you tend to see tropical fish showing up. All through the summer at very high latitudes, well outside the range you would normally see them. This particular study by my colleague Adriana was highlighting the fact that many of these, when they're herbivores, have a big impact on the environment on the local environment where they settled, because they start eating all the kelp and the systems aren't necessarily evolved, if you will, to deal with that level of fish omnivore or fish or omnivore.
