A team of biologists and construction experts are working together to create a new building material that can actually recreate itself. This material will guarantee no cracks and prevent what could escalate into severe structural damage. The magic ingredient is a species of fungus that is mixed into the concrete to produce a hybrid material that can, in likeness of science fiction, heal itself. The fungus remains dormant when enclosed in an oxygen-free environment, but it becomes activated when cracks occur, which brings it into contact with oxygen and water. It then grows minerals to fill in the crack from the inside, just like a clot. Once the crack is sealed, it returns to its inactive state.
