The Victorian writer Charles Dickens is best known for his novels, including A Christmas Carol and David Copperfield. But he was also responsible for what today we might call 'investigative journalism'. Dickens visited people in workhouses, a kind of social housing, and published a series of articles in the newspaper that exposed the terrible living conditions in them. He made readers aware of the abuse that the poor suffered at the hands of the overseers who made them work very hard, but gave them very little to eat.
