We all thought she was not exactly a human, but we thought this is their moment to elect a woman, or there was a woman from Eastern Europe who could have got it too. We thought it was obvious she was beaten by a man and she talked about the opaque nature of the voting. She was beaten by politics. The Americans wouldn't have her because they can't stand what New Zealand has done with a range of foreign policy things; But she was, she said she met her first glass ceiling. She's been a remarkable contributor. Her first glass ceiling at the UN, and she was really antsy about it actually. I was quite struck by it, but that was that ultimate, you know, it's one of the big, big jobs; and Nancy Pelosi does very well. But we're all looking on, I think, as women and men and thinking. Yeah, but that's not the big. One is a woman, though.
I am optimistic. I think that she was a unique candidate in both positive and negative terms; and many of the things that people thought about her around her gender were unique to her. But if you look at, you know be below the level of President, we have really compelling evidence. Jennifer Lawless, who was one of Simon students at Stanford at American industry, has done the definitive work on this and the issue the lack of representation for women in office in the US is a supply problem. It's people not running. It's women not running. It is not. Once women run again, if they're competitive on money competitive districts, they win at the same rates as men. Part of it is that partisanship Trump's everything; and the US has become so polarised in partisan terms.
