Student transportation preferences at my university have undergone a remarkable green transition from 2010 to 2024. At the outset, personal vehicles represented the dominant mode at 45%, with bicycle/e-scooter comprising 30% and public transport accounting for 25%. By 2024, a dramatic modal shift had occurred. Car dependency plummeted to a mere 18%, whilst bicycle/e-scooter usage soared to 55%, becoming the predominant choice. Public transport demonstrated modest yet consistent growth, advancing from 25% to 27%. Several factors may account for this transformation. University sustainability policies — such as reducing car parking spaces and expanding cycling infrastructure — served as significant deterrents to car dependency and incentivised sustainable commuting alternatives. Furthermore, the introduction of cheaper bus tickets for students likely underpinned the incremental yet steady rise in public transport adoption. Forecasting 2029, it appears probable that micro-mobility solutions will constitute approximately 70% of campus transportation, with enhanced cycling infrastructure supplementing traditional transport options. This trajectory exemplifies the successful implementation of sustainability- oriented transport policy.
