In your mind, picture the Eiffel Tower. Then place another one on top of it. Then stuck another 4498 Eiffel Towers on top of those two and you'll come close to imagining how much electrical waste was created on the planet in 2016. That's 44.7 million metric tonnes of mobile phones, pc's, refrigerators and so on. By 2021, that figure is expected to rise to more than 52 million tonnes. Asia accounted for more than 40 per cent of this rubbish as a result of its growing economies and expanding middle classes. One industry publication blames the waste on the affordability of electronic devices now, and their wider availability.
