Pioneers on early missions to the moon did not sleep very low. Although the Apollo 11 lunar module, for example, was designed to be large enough to accommodate two passengers, its cabin was crowded with bulky equipment and specimens collected on the mission. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the first astronauts who tried to sleep in space, found that they were unable to stretch out fully, and they were required to sleep in their spacesuits, which were uncomfortable and not very warm. In addition, the system regulating the craft was noisy, and its illuminated switches and panels kept the environment uncomfortably bright—all circumstances that are not conducive to restful sleep. While the Apollo craft was being built, its designers gave priority to functionality over comfort. Focused on its safe landing on the moon, they needed to make the lunar module as lightweight as possible, which meant that its interior, including its sleeping quarters, was not very luxurious.
