An  effective  sense  of  smell  is  important  in  many  areas  of  life.  It  acts  as  a  warning  system.  People  know  that  they    hang  around  once  they  detect  the  smell  of  smoke.  You  don't  have  to  put  in  any  effort  with  smells,  as  our  nose  is  10,000  times  more  sensitive  than  your  tongue  and  you    identify  many  tastes  without  it.  In  an  experiment,  participants  had  to  eat  chocolate  while  holding  their  noses.  There  were  able  to  identify  the  sweetness  but    identify  the  chocolate  flavour.  This  is  because  the  flavours  of  foods  such  as  chocolate  or  coffee    be  sensed  through  smell  rather  than  through  taste.  Smell  is  also  directly  connected  to  the  emotional  part  of  the  brain  and  to  memories,  too.  Participants  in  one  test    easily  associate  smells  with  people  and  events  decades  after  the  actual  experience.  They  didn't  have  to  be  exposed  to  the  smell  for  very  long  either.  Just  0.5  seconds  was  enough  to  make  the  connections.
