Scientists  have  discovered  the  oldest  direct  evidence  of  oxygenic  photosynthesis,  the  process  by  which  cells  use  sunlight,  water  and  carbon  dioxide  to  produce  energy  and  oxygen.  The  evidence  consists  of  fossils  of  microscopic  structures  called  stromatolites,  which    by  layers  of  cyanobacteria  and  sediment.  The  fossils    back  to  75  billion  years  ago,  pushing  back  the  origin  of  oxygenic  photosynthesis  by  2  billion  years.  The  discovery,  published  in  Nature,  sheds  new  light  on  the  evolution  of  life  on  Earth  and  the  Great  Oxygenation  Event,  a  crucial  period  in  which  oxygen  levels  in  the  atmosphere  and  oceans  increased  .  The  researchers  analyzed  the  fossils  from  the  McDermott  Formation  in  Australia  using  various  techniques,  including  scanning  electron  microscopy  and  Raman  spectroscopy.  They  found  that  the  stromatolites  contained  structures  similar  to  those  of  modern  cyanobacteria,  indicating  that  they  were    of  oxygenic  photosynthesis.
