People disagree about whether education primarily serves to secure a better future or simply promotes self-improvement. In my view, while personal development is fundamental, the broader purpose of education is to improve future life prospects through that growth. Knowledge, skills, and attitudes gained through learning shape opportunities, stability, and informed choices, so these objectives are interconnected rather than conflicting.

Education strengthens future prospects by providing practical competencies, recognised qualifications, and flexible thinking. During my studies, training in analysis and academic writing improved both my employability and confidence in professional environments. Although education does not guarantee success, it expands access to meaningful work and long-term security. In this way, learning operates as an investment that gradually increases resilience in a competitive labour market.

Some people argue that education should focus only on self-improvement, including curiosity and personal fulfilment. I partly agree, because education also builds discipline, ethical judgement, and self-awareness. For instance, reflective assignments required me to assess my strengths and weaknesses honestly, improving decisions beyond academic tasks. However, these internal benefits ultimately support a better future by informing responsible career planning and everyday choices.

In conclusion, self-improvement is a core function of education, but its greater value lies in enabling a better future. Personal growth and practical outcomes reinforce each other, making education a foundation for sustainable advancement and improved quality of life.
