The pursuit of scientific knowledge can be driven either by curiosity or by the desire for practical use. While knowledge for its own sake enriches human understanding, I argue that practical use is the more important reason. Science ultimately gains its greatest value when scientific research addresses real needs and improves human welfare.

Focusing on practical outcomes ensures that scientific research contributes directly to social and economic progress. Applied science has produced medical treatments, efficient energy systems and improved communication, all of which transform daily life. For example, research aimed at treating infectious diseases has saved millions of lives and strengthened public health. When funding and talent are directed towards solving tangible problems, scientific knowledge becomes a practical tool for reducing suffering and increasing productivity.

Admittedly, knowledge-driven research can produce unexpected discoveries, and many applications originate from theoretical scientific work. However, even such a discovery becomes meaningful only when it is eventually put to practical use. Without a clear pathway to use, scientific findings risk remaining abstract and inaccessible. Prioritising practical relevance also promotes accountability, as scientists must demonstrate how their research benefits society through innovation and technology.

In conclusion, although curiosity is a valuable starting point, the practical use of scientific knowledge is the stronger reason for pursuing research. By focusing on real-world use, science fulfils its responsibility to society and ensures that scientific knowledge and discovery translate into lasting, measurable progress.
