Many school systems prioritise preparing pupils for numerous examinations, often at the expense of deeper understanding. I largely agree that reducing exam overload would enable children to learn more effectively, because excessive testing narrows curricula and discourages sustained engagement with ideas.

The strongest reason is that frequent high-stakes exams encourage rote learning rather than genuine comprehension. When lessons are shaped by test formats, teachers focus on predictable content and repetitive drills, leaving limited space for discussion, application, or curiosity. In my secondary schooling, subjects with fewer formal tests involved projects and debates, and I retained key concepts far longer. This approach develops transferable abilities, such as critical thinking and analytical skills, which standard examinations rarely capture accurately.

Admittedly, some assessment is necessary to monitor progress and maintain academic standards, and exams can motivate regular study. However, the current scale is often excessive and counterproductive. I experienced periods with overlapping tests when stress dominated learning, leading to short-term cramming and rapid forgetting. A balanced system that combines fewer exams with coursework and detailed feedback preserves accountability while improving understanding and student wellbeing.

Overall, I agree to a large extent that children should learn more rather than prepare for huge numbers of exams. Reducing test pressure broadens teaching methods, deepens comprehension, and supports lasting educational outcomes. A measured approach to assessment can maintain rigour without sacrificing meaningful learning.
