While free access expands reach, I do not believe online material should generally be accessed at no cost. A sustainable digital culture requires fair remuneration for creators alongside affordable access for users.

First, creative production depends on predictable income to fund talent, equipment and time. When content is routinely consumed for free, artists and producers struggle to invest in quality and innovation, leading to increasingly uniform output. For example, subscription-based streaming has enabled regular releases and higher production standards by returning steady revenue to creators. The result is a healthier ecosystem in which audiences benefit from diversity and reliability.

Admittedly, free access can promote inclusion, especially for students and low-income users, and can help new artists gain exposure. However, this goal can be met without eliminating payment by using tiered pricing, limited free samples or public funding for educational use. Such models preserve accessibility while signalling that creative labour has value, which discourages piracy and supports long-term viability.

In conclusion, unrestricted free access to online materials undermines the economic foundations of creativity. Fair payment mechanisms encourage sustained production and higher quality, while targeted concessions address equity concerns. Therefore, online content should be affordable and accessible, but not predominantly free.
