Whether parents should bear legal responsibility for their children's actions remains a contentious social issue. I largely agree that parents ought to be held accountable, but only within defined limits linked to supervision, guidance, and neglect. Such a position encourages responsible parenting while avoiding excessive or unfair punishment.

Parental liability is justified when a child's wrongdoing stems from clear negligence or lack of oversight. Parents exert strong influence over behaviour through discipline, routines, and moral education, particularly during early development. For example, if a minor repeatedly damages public property after being allowed to wander unsupervised late at night, penalties such as fines or compulsory parenting programmes can motivate closer monitoring. These responses emphasise that guardians have a duty to reduce predictable risks and to instil respect for the law.

Nevertheless, it is unreasonable to hold parents legally responsible for every offence committed by their children. As children grow older, they acquire independent judgement shaped by peers, schooling, and personal decisions beyond parental control. Assigning full legal blame to parents for serious crimes committed by an older teenager would disregard individual agency and could discourage healthy independence. In such circumstances, legal accountability should rest primarily with the young offender, alongside rehabilitative support.

In conclusion, parents should be held legally responsible only when their failure to supervise or educate directly contributes to a child's misconduct. This balanced approach upholds social responsibility while recognising children's increasing autonomy.
