Assessing student learning primarily through written examinations remains widespread, yet its appropriateness is increasingly questioned. Although such tests can evaluate recall and structured argumentation, treating them as the central measure of achievement is misguided. In my view, an education system dominated by written exams is incorrect because it restricts learning outcomes and provides a partial picture of student ability.

The main weakness is that written exams tend to reward rote recall rather than deep comprehension and practical application. Under strict time limits and rigid formats, students are encouraged to prioritise speed and exam tactics instead of reflective thinking. For instance, a science learner may reproduce theories accurately on paper but be unable to design an investigation or analyse authentic results. As a result, grades often indicate examination skill rather than genuine understanding.

Advocates claim that written exams are objective, efficient, and easily comparable across large groups, which has some merit. However, consistency should not be confused with educational accuracy. When assessment is broadened to include projects, presentations, and practical tasks, it captures abilities such as collaboration, analytical reasoning, and effective communication that exams largely overlook. This combination produces a more reliable judgement by evaluating performance in varied contexts.

In conclusion, written examinations alone do not offer a correct assessment of student learning. While they can assess foundational knowledge, excessive reliance distorts educational priorities. A balanced assessment framework more accurately reflects real competence and supports meaningful learning.
