Whether children should take extra academic classes or play after school is widely debated among parents and teachers. In particular, extra classes can strengthen skills, while play supports the holistic development that children need after school. On the whole, in my opinion, regular play should be prioritised, because it builds social, physical, and emotional capacities.

Moreover, supporters of extra classes emphasise better academic performance and discipline through structured tuition. For instance, a remedial mathematics class may help struggling children gain confidence and keep pace at school while reducing long-term stress. Furthermore, this structured learning can close gaps and build study habits, which is a genuine benefit for many students.

However, frequent after-school classes limit the time for play that is essential for the healthy development of children. Indeed, through games and sport, children learn collaboration and emotional control while maintaining physical fitness and wellbeing. Admittedly, a child who plays football or invents games practises resilience and social interaction that transfer to classroom learning. Consequently, in my view, extra classes should be used sparingly, whereas daily play after school deserves clear priority.

In conclusion, academic tuition is effective when specific needs exist, but excessive scheduling undermines the balance children require. Ultimately, ensuring children have time to play after school fosters motivated learners and supports both academic success and lifelong health.
