Whether mega sporting events should be staged remains contested, because they demand vast public investment yet promise global benefits. In particular, I argue that large-scale games such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup should be held when planned responsibly. On the whole, in my opinion, the economic, social, and cultural gains of such an international sporting event can outweigh its cost.

Moreover, these large-scale games generate lasting economic and infrastructure value when aligned with long-term urban plans. For instance, an Olympic host city often accelerates transport upgrades and tourism promotion that would otherwise take decades to complete. Furthermore, improved transit and regenerated districts continue to serve residents long after the event, so the games strengthen local employment. Indeed, national pride and social cohesion also grow when a country stages a global sporting event that unites diverse communities.

Admittedly, critics emphasise the cost overruns and underused stadiums that a large sporting event leaves behind, reflecting governance failures. However, these risks are not inherent flaws in the games, because transparent budgeting and venue reuse can protect communities from waste. Consequently, recent bids that prioritise sustainability and shared legacy show how the World Cup and Olympic Games can limit waste.

In conclusion, cancelling mega events would forfeit valuable opportunities for shared culture and international collaboration between every country. Ultimately, when hosts commit to fiscal discipline and legacy planning, the Olympic Games and the World Cup remain worthwhile global events.
