Many contemporary global challenges are closely linked to the actions and limitations of governments and international organisations. Issues such as climate change, pandemics and forced migration cross borders, yet political responses remain fragmented. I argue that weak collaboration and short-term national interests are the central problems, and that stronger multilateral governance and accountability offer the most effective solutions.

One major problem is that national governments prioritise domestic agendas over global responsibility. This leads to delayed action on emissions, unequal vaccine distribution and inconsistent humanitarian policies. International organisations often lack enforcement power, relying on voluntary compliance that powerful states can ignore. As a result, global problems escalate while trust in collective institutions erodes.

To address these challenges, governments must commit to binding international agreements with clear monitoring mechanisms. Strengthening organisations through stable funding and legal authority would improve collaboration and compliance. For example, shared climate targets enforced through trade incentives could align national interests with global goals. Additionally, transparent decision-making and fair representation would enhance legitimacy and collaboration among member states.

In conclusion, global problems persist not because solutions are unknown, but because governance remains divided and weak. By reducing short-term nationalism and empowering international organisations, collective action can become more effective. Such reforms would enable governments to manage shared risks responsibly and deliver sustainable outcomes for the global community.
