Linking teachers' pay to how much learning students achieve appears attractive, yet I largely disagree with this approach. Learning outcomes are shaped by multiple forces beyond classroom instruction, and pay-for-results risks distorting professional practice rather than improving educational quality.

First, student learning is heavily influenced by prior attainment, family support, language background, and school resources. A teacher working with disadvantaged cohorts may achieve substantial progress that remains invisible in test scores. For example, improving attendance, confidence, and literacy foundations can be transformative but slow to register in standard measures. Tying salaries to measured gains would therefore penalise effective teachers and incentivise schools to avoid challenging students, undermining equity.

Second, performance-based pay narrows teaching and damages collaboration. When remuneration depends on quantified outcomes, teachers are pushed towards teaching to the test, curriculum reduction, and strategic grading. It also discourages sharing materials or mentoring colleagues because collaboration dilutes individual advantage. Education depends on collective expertise and long-term development, which are better supported by stable pay, rigorous appraisal, and targeted professional development rather than volatile incentives.

In conclusion, paying teachers according to student learning oversimplifies a complex process and creates perverse incentives. Fair remuneration should recognise professional skill, context, and growth through robust evaluation systems, not rely on crude outcome metrics that risk harming quality and fairness.
