Travelling in a group with a tour guide is often promoted as the ideal way to explore new places. While this approach offers certain practical benefits, I largely disagree that it is the best way to travel for most people. Independent or small-scale travel generally provides greater flexibility, deeper engagement, and more personal satisfaction.

The main advantage of guided group travel is organisational efficiency. A tour guide manages transport, accommodation, and schedules, which reduces stress, especially in unfamiliar countries. This can be valuable for first-time travellers or those with limited time, as key attractions are covered efficiently and safety risks are minimised. For example, organised city tours allow visitors to see major landmarks without navigating complex local systems.

However, guided group travel significantly limits autonomy, which weakens the overall experience. Fixed itineraries restrict spontaneous decisions, such as staying longer in a meaningful place or exploring local neighbourhoods. Moreover, large groups often follow a superficial route designed for convenience rather than cultural depth. Independent travellers can interact more naturally with local people, choose activities aligned with their interests, and adapt plans according to personal pace and curiosity, leading to more authentic learning.

In conclusion, although group travel led by a tour guide is convenient and suitable for specific situations, it is not the best method overall. Greater independence in travel usually results in richer experiences, stronger cultural understanding, and higher personal fulfilment.
