Scientists have long debated whether personality and behaviour are shaped more by nature or by nurture, and this debate remains central within modern psychology. While our genetic nature provides some initial dispositions, I argue that nurture exerts the greater influence on personality, because environment, education, and steady practice continually reshape any inborn nature across a lifetime. Indeed, exposure and social interaction gradually modify the raw skills that nature supplies.

Firstly, nurture powerfully shapes our skills through sustained practice and honest feedback. For instance, children raised in a language-rich environment usually acquire stronger skills regardless of the aptitude that nature granted them. Similarly, disciplined training and daily practice can turn an average musical ability into a high-level performance, which shows that nurture often outweighs the raw talent of nature. Clearly, these examples demonstrate how learning and a supportive environment mould personality and ability more than nature alone.

Admittedly, nature does influence temperament, and such genetic limits on ability cannot simply be ignored. However, our genetic nature is probabilistic rather than fixed, so it still requires the right environment and nurture to be expressed as real skill. For instance, a person whose nature includes an inherited tendency towards anxiety may function well within a supportive family, because nurture channels that biological nature into a healthier personality.

In conclusion, although nature establishes a starting point, nurture and steady practice more strongly determine personality and our skills over time. Therefore, scientists should invest in a positive environment and good training, since this nurture reshapes the differences of nature into diverse outcomes.
