Artificial lighting has expanded rapidly with urban growth, extending daylight into the natural habitats of wildlife. Clearly, in my view, excessive artificial light has a largely harmful impact on wildlife because it disrupts the biological rhythms of animals and alters fragile ecosystems. However, while artificial lighting supports human safety and activity, its ecological costs for wildlife are often underestimated by us.

First, the most serious effect of artificial lighting is the disturbance of the circadian rhythms that govern feeding, migration, and reproduction in wildlife. Indeed, many animals rely on natural light cues, and constant artificial illumination can confuse the orientation and timing of these creatures. For example, sea turtle hatchlings are drawn towards artificial streetlights instead of the ocean, and this reduces the survival rates of such wildlife. Consequently, this disorientation weakens animal populations over time and can shift the predator and prey relationships within affected ecosystems.

Moreover, artificial lighting also degrades habitats by changing animal behaviour and increasing the exposure of wildlife to threats. Furthermore, nocturnal animals may avoid lit areas and lose feeding grounds, while other creatures become more visible to predators. Although some argue that wildlife can adapt, such adaptation often favours a few tolerant animals, and this leads to reduced biodiversity across ecosystems.

Ultimately, artificial lighting poses a significant challenge to wildlife by disrupting the natural cycles and habitats of animals. Therefore, limiting unnecessary illumination and adopting wildlife-sensitive lighting designs can reduce harm to these ecosystems without sacrificing our human needs.
