Television news bulletins are dominated by conflict, disaster and crime, reflecting the belief that bad news is most newsworthy. Clearly, I strongly agree that this imbalance in television reporting should be corrected through a deliberate mixture of bad and good news. Moreover, broader television coverage would inform citizens more accurately and support healthier public judgement without denying the serious realities of wars and violence.

First, constant exposure to bad news distorts perceptions of risk and social progress in the media. Indeed, when wars, crime and disaster lead every television bulletin, viewers may assume that decline is universal, despite genuine improvements in health, education and safety. Furthermore, including constructive news reporting, such as successful policies or community responses after a disaster, provides context and helps audiences assess priorities rationally.

Admittedly, critics argue that positive news stories are trivial and distract from accountability in broadcast journalism. However, good news does not mean soft television content. Specifically, investigations into effective governance, scientific breakthroughs, or crime reduction strategies can be rigorous and highly relevant. For instance, reporting on how a city reduced accidents and traffic fatalities can inform other regions and encourage evidence-based solutions.

Ultimately, television news should retain hard reporting on crime and conflict while balancing it with credible good news. Therefore, a mixed television agenda corrects bias, reduces the anxiety caused by relentless bad news, and strengthens civic understanding. Consequently, by broadcasting both problems and progress, the media serve the public interest more fully and sustain long-term trust in news coverage.
