As concern grows about climate change and chronic disease, more people are choosing vegetarian diets for environmental and health reasons. While governments should promote informed dietary choices, they should not encourage all adults to become vegetarians. A universal approach ignores diversity in health needs, culture, and practical circumstances.

First, although plant-based diets can reduce emissions and improve public health, they are not equally suitable for everyone. Some adults have medical conditions, nutritional requirements, or lifestyles that make strict vegetarianism difficult. For example, individuals with certain deficiencies or demanding physical jobs may require carefully balanced diets that are harder to maintain without animal products. Government guidance should therefore emphasise flexibility, such as reducing meat consumption, rather than prescribing a single model.

Second, food choices are deeply connected to cultural traditions and personal autonomy. Strong governmental pressure to adopt vegetarianism could be perceived as intrusive and counterproductive, leading to resistance rather than positive change. In my experience, campaigns that encourage moderation, such as promoting one or two meat-free days per week, are more widely accepted and easier to sustain. These measures still deliver environmental benefits without alienating the public.

In conclusion, although vegetarian diets offer clear advantages, governments should not encourage all adults to become vegetarian. A balanced policy that supports reduced meat consumption, education, and choice is more practical, respectful, and ultimately more effective.
