Organic farming is frequently promoted as a sustainable alternative to industrial agriculture, which leads to debate about its capacity to feed an expanding global population. I largely believe that organic farming can make a valuable contribution to food security, but it cannot meet worldwide demand to a great extent by itself.

One substantial limitation of organic agriculture is its generally lower crop yields when compared with conventional farming. In the absence of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, farmers often need more land and time to achieve similar output, which is unrealistic in densely populated areas. For instance, organically grown staple crops usually produce smaller harvests, restricting their ability to satisfy large-scale consumption.

Advocates claim that organic systems enhance soil quality and biodiversity, supporting agricultural productivity over the long term. Although this benefit is important, it does not adequately address urgent hunger driven by rapid population growth and unequal distribution. Furthermore, organic production is typically more labour-intensive, which raises prices and limits accessibility for many low-income households.

In summary, organic farming can strengthen global food systems by promoting environmental sustainability and resilience. Nevertheless, because of yield limitations, extensive land use, and higher costs, it is not capable of feeding the entire world population alone. A blended strategy that combines organic methods with efficient conventional agriculture is therefore a more practical solution.
