The rapid expansion of governmental and commercial activity beyond Earth has transformed outer space from a scientific frontier into a shared operational domain. As satellites, exploration missions and private launches multiply, unregulated behaviour risks conflict, debris and inequitable access. In my view, robust space laws and governance are not merely desirable but essential for sustainable and peaceful use of space.

First, clear legal frameworks reduce the likelihood of conflict by defining rights, responsibilities and liability among states and companies. Without agreed rules, disputes over orbital slots, resource extraction or military use could escalate rapidly. For example, governance mechanisms for satellite collaboration help prevent collisions and manage space debris, protecting critical communication and navigation services on Earth.

Secondly, effective governance promotes fairness and long-term sustainability in an environment with limited capacity. Powerful actors might otherwise dominate valuable orbits or extraterrestrial resources, marginalising emerging space nations. Although some argue that regulation stifles innovation, predictable laws actually encourage investment by reducing uncertainty and ensuring that commercial activity occurs within stable boundaries.

In conclusion, as human presence in space intensifies, the absence of coherent rules would generate avoidable risks and inequalities. Space laws provide order, accountability and confidence for governmental and private actors. Therefore, comprehensive and collaborative governance is indispensable to preserving space as a secure, accessible and beneficial domain for future generations.
