Despite all the advancement made by mankind, some people still argue that gender equality is a myth. In my opinion, gender equality remains more aspirational than real, because structural disparities between men and women persist in work and private life. Therefore, the claim that men and women now enjoy full equality deserves careful scrutiny.

The most compelling evidence lies in the labour market, where unequal outcomes for women endure despite formal rights. Women are overrepresented in lower-paid jobs and underrepresented in high-level leadership, and they are often penalised for career breaks linked to caregiving. For instance, promotion systems that reward uninterrupted availability favour male career patterns, so men keep pay and authority while women lose ground. These patterns show that opportunity is still shaped by gender rather than merit alone.

Admittedly, some people contend that education access and anti-discrimination laws prove that equality has largely been achieved. However, equal rules do not guarantee equal results when social expectations of men and women differ sharply. Women continue to perform a disproportionate share of unpaid domestic work, which constrains their time and professional development. Consequently, this invisible burden keeps many women financially dependent and weakens the practical impact of formal rights.

In conclusion, although the advancement of law and awareness is undeniable, it has not eliminated entrenched gender imbalances. Persistent workplace inequality and unequal domestic burdens on women demonstrate that equality remains incomplete. Therefore, in my opinion, gender equality is not yet a reality but an ongoing project that mankind must still complete.
