Important choices often involve lasting consequences, so advice from others can be valuable. Nevertheless, the claim that a person should never make an important decision alone is excessively rigid. I disagree with this view because independent judgement is sometimes essential, and reliance on groups can weaken responsibility. Sound choices depend on circumstances rather than an absolute rule.

First, some major decisions demand personal autonomy because only the individual fully understands their own goals, values, and tolerance for risk. Decisions about career direction, relocation, or medical treatment are shaped by private priorities that external opinions cannot accurately assess. Making such choices alone encourages accountability and reduces the likelihood of regret caused by following unsuitable guidance. Over time, this independence also strengthens confidence in one's own judgement.

Second, collective choice processes can introduce bias, conflict, and a diffusion of responsibility. When many voices are involved, dominant personalities may overshadow careful reasoning, while compromises dilute strong options. For example, committees sometimes select cautious but ineffective solutions because no single member feels ownership of the outcome. In these situations, careful individual analysis can be more rational and efficient than forced consensus.

In conclusion, although seeking advice is often sensible, it should not be a compulsory requirement for every important choice. Independent decisions can preserve personal values and reinforce responsibility. Therefore, major decisions should balance consultation with the capacity to decide alone when appropriate.
