Rewarding exceptional employees with extra money is a common management practice intended to raise motivation and workplace performance. While financial bonuses can stimulate the effort of some staff, their overall effectiveness as an incentive is limited. Clearly, in my view, monetary rewards work only to a moderate extent and should be complemented by broader motivational strategies.

Firstly, extra money can be a strong short-term incentive because it gives employees clear recognition and immediate value for their contribution. For instance, when performance targets are transparent, a bonus may encourage staff to exceed expectations, particularly in sales-driven or results-based roles that benefit company revenue. However, this reward effect tends to fade once the extra money becomes an expected part of pay rather than an exceptional acknowledgement of contribution.

Moreover, financial rewards can damage morale and teamwork across the company. Specifically, employees who feel overlooked may become disengaged, especially if their contribution is difficult to quantify or the reward appears subjective to the wider team. Consequently, this can foster unhealthy competition, reduce collaboration, and shift staff attention away from intrinsic motivation such as professional pride. Admittedly, in knowledge-based roles, excessive emphasis on money may even discourage the creativity and long-term thinking a company needs.

Therefore, more effective management combines fair pay with non-financial incentives for employees. In particular, opportunities for career development, meaningful feedback, autonomy, and public recognition often generate the sustained commitment that money alone cannot secure. Ultimately, by addressing employees' professional growth and sense of value, an employer can encourage consistent hard work and stronger performance with far greater reliability than any cash bonus.
