Some experts contend that historical knowledge holds little value for people concerned mainly with the present. I largely disagree with this statement, because understanding the past sharpens judgement, supports sound choices and preserves cultural continuity. Although many challenges appear modern, their underlying causes are often rooted in earlier experience, which makes history practically valuable rather than purely academic to individuals today.

To begin with, awareness of history strengthens critical thinking by exposing recurring patterns across every era of human behaviour and policy. For instance, economic crises across history frequently arise after similar mistakes, including excessive risk taking or inadequate oversight. Indeed, when people recognise these historical parallels, they assess present policies more carefully and avoid repeating the errors that previously caused social and financial harm.

In addition, the past offers guidance at a personal level, as my own experience shows. Specifically, during my university studies, learning about earlier technological revolutions helped me understand why adaptability and continuous learning outweigh narrow expertise in the present era. Admittedly, some argue that history is irrelevant in a fast-changing world. However, ignoring the past encourages short-term thinking and weakens the perspective that individuals need for wise decisions.

Furthermore, knowledge of the past reinforces identity, heritage and reflection, giving both people and society a shared sense of continuity over time. Consequently, historical understanding supports responsible innovation and personal growth rather than obstructing progress. In conclusion, knowledge of the past remains highly valuable for those living in the present, because it improves judgement and leads to wiser choices, so I strongly disagree with the experts who claim the past has little value.
