Whether women should serve in the army, navy and air force on the same basis as men remains contested. I largely agree that they should be permitted equal access, provided recruitment and deployment are governed by role-specific standards rather than assumptions about gender.

The strongest reason is that contemporary military forces depend on a wide range of capabilities beyond physical strength alone. Intelligence analysis, cyber operations, logistics, aviation and medical support prioritise judgement, training and teamwork, areas in which women perform as effectively as men. Allowing women to compete for these positions expands the talent pool and enhances operational effectiveness. For instance, mixed-gender units can improve communication with civilian populations during peacekeeping missions, which may reduce tension and support long-term stability.

Opponents argue that biological differences could undermine combat readiness and unit cohesion. However, this concern can be managed through rigorous, identical performance benchmarks for each role. When standards are transparent and strictly enforced, only candidates who meet operational demands will be selected, regardless of sex. Furthermore, cohesion is primarily shaped by leadership quality, shared training and professional discipline rather than gender composition, as demonstrated by integrated air and naval crews that already operate effectively.

In conclusion, women should be allowed to join all branches of the military to a large extent. Equal opportunity, combined with strict role-based standards, promotes fairness while safeguarding effectiveness. Excluding women purely on the basis of gender is therefore neither justified nor beneficial.
