Unemployment is a persistent economic challenge, and some argue that rapid urbanisation is the only effective response. I largely disagree with this claim. While urban growth can generate employment, treating it as the exclusive solution ignores structural causes of joblessness and risks creating additional social and economic pressures.

Urbanisation can reduce unemployment by concentrating investment, infrastructure, and labour markets in cities. Expanding transport, housing, and services creates construction and service jobs, while dense urban centres attract firms that benefit from skilled labour and efficient supply chains. In practice, industrial zones near major cities often absorb rural migrants into manufacturing and logistics roles, especially during periods of sustained public and private development.

However, relying exclusively on rapid urban growth is neither sufficient nor sustainable. Without parallel investment in education, vocational training, and regional development, cities may face underemployment, informal work, and overcrowding. Moreover, rural areas and small towns lose human capital, weakening agriculture and local enterprises. Policies that promote skills development, digital work, and decentralised industries can create employment opportunities across regions without imposing excessive urban strain.

In conclusion, urbanisation can contribute meaningfully to employment creation, but it is not the only effective way to tackle unemployment. A balanced strategy that combines managed urban growth with skills training and regional economic diversification is more likely to deliver stable and inclusive employment outcomes over the long term.
