In my opinion, this mixture of positive and negative effects explains why television is often described as both a blessing and a curse.

Firstly, one clear advantage of television is its ability to educate and inform efficiently through this medium. For example, news programmes and documentaries on television raise awareness of global events and culture and communication, which benefits viewers with limited access to formal schooling. Moreover, television offers affordable entertainment that helps people relax, and this device encourages shared experiences when families watch programmes together. Consequently, these outlets strengthen cohesion and general wellbeing, a genuine advantage of watching television.

However, despite these benefits, television also presents significant disadvantages and can become a distraction. For instance, excessive viewing of television promotes a sedentary lifestyle, which harms mental and physical health through obesity and eye strain. In addition, some television content emphasises violence and consumerism and unrealistic standards of success. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to such content can foster addiction, especially among children, and may normalise aggressive behaviour, a serious disadvantage of television.
