Children's lives are shaped by rapid technological, economic, and social change, prompting debate about whether childhood has become harder than in the past. I largely agree that contemporary children face greater pressures overall, even though some material conditions have improved. The intensity and complexity of modern demands often outweigh historical disadvantages.

One major difficulty is the psychological pressure created by constant connectivity and academic competition. Digital media exposes children to comparison, cyberbullying, and information overload, while schools increasingly emphasise testing and credentials. For example, a child may be judged simultaneously by online popularity and exam rankings, reducing resilience and well-being. Such pressures make mistakes more costly and persistent.

A further factor is economic insecurity and reduced autonomy in densely populated societies. Rising housing costs, safety concerns, and structured schedules limit independent play and increase parental surveillance. Although previous generations faced poverty or manual labour, many children today experience chronic stress from uncertainty and restricted freedom. This environment can hinder social development and confidence.

Overall, while modern healthcare, education, and technology provide clear benefits, they do not eliminate the heightened pressures of contemporary childhood. The combination of digital exposure, competitive schooling, and constrained independence makes life harder in important respects. Therefore, I agree to a large extent that children in the 21st century face greater challenges than those in the past.
