In the past 100 years, many inventions have transformed human civilisation, yet antibiotics stand out as the most important among them. While airplanes revolutionised transportation and computers reshaped communication, no invention has saved more lives than antibiotics. Their contribution to medicine and health is unparalleled in modern history.

Firstly, antibiotics directly addressed the leading causes of premature death before the twentieth century. Bacterial infections claimed millions of lives annually, reducing human health and life expectancy so severely that even minor injuries proved fatal. Within a generation, antibiotics converted these death sentences into routine medical treatments, fundamentally altering health outcomes and extending average life expectancy across entire populations.

Secondly, antibiotics made virtually all modern medicine possible. Innovation in complex surgery, cancer chemotherapy and organ transplants depends entirely on controlling infection, since technology cannot substitute for this prerequisite. For example, without antibiotics, open-heart surgery would have remained impossible, as patients would die from post-operative bacterial infections before recovering.

Furthermore, the economic benefits of antibiotics extend well beyond medicine itself. By keeping labourers healthy and reducing absenteeism, antibiotics sustained the productivity needed to drive progress in transportation, devices and machines. Consequently, advancements in flight, computers and other technology all benefited indirectly from a healthier, longer-lived workforce enabled by antibiotic treatment.

In conclusion, although airplanes transformed flight and computers revolutionised communication devices, antibiotics achieved something far more fundamental: they preserved the health required to drive every other innovation forward. For these reasons, antibiotics represent the most important invention of the past 100 years.
