Graduates commonly receive higher salaries than people without degrees, which leads some to claim that students should pay the full cost of university education. Although increased earnings are a real outcome of tertiary study, I disagree that individuals should entirely finance their courses. A shared funding approach is fairer and more practical for the wider economy.

The strongest reason is that higher education generates substantial social value beyond personal income. Skilled graduates improve productivity, drive innovation, and contribute to higher tax revenues across their careers. For instance, trained engineers, teachers, and medical professionals strengthen essential services that benefit the whole community, not just the individuals themselves. Because society profits from an educated workforce, it is reasonable for governments to cover part of the expense rather than treating degrees as purely private assets.

Furthermore, requiring full fees can restrict access for capable students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Even when loans are available, the prospect of heavy debt may discourage participation, limiting social mobility and wasting potential talent. Supporters argue that full payment promotes responsibility and efficiency; however, this aim can be achieved through income-based repayments and partial tuition charges. Such systems connect contributions to actual earnings while protecting those with limited financial resources.

In conclusion, although degree holders often earn more, forcing them to meet the entire cost of their education is unjustified. Since higher education delivers clear public benefits and supports equal opportunity, its funding should be shared between graduates and society as a whole.
