David Herbert Lawrence was the son of a coal-miner and a schoolteacher. He was a clever child, and later went to Nottingham University and trained as a teacher. By this time he had started writing, and in 1913 he produced what many people believe to be his greatest novel, "Sons and Lovers". This describes his childhood and the various strong relationships he had both with his mother and with friends outside the home.

The hero of the story, Paul Morel, is constantly torn by his desire both to love and to be loved, while also remaining free to go his own way. In other novels, such as "The Rainbow", Lawrence describes his characters most secret Many Europeans are descendants of the Celts, and Celtic place names such as London and Paris and river names such as the Rhine, Danube and Thames are still in use. The Celts first homeland was probably in what is now southern Germany and the Czechia. They were warriors, farmers and traders, who used iron weapons to conquer more lands, and iron tools to farm them. Their opponents found the Celtic warriors terrifying. In order to scare their enemies’ battle, Celtic warriors combed their hair to make it stand on end, often tattooed or decorated their bodies, and rushed shouting into battle.
