I like to think of Shakespeare as our first great literary commuter. I mean by this, as somebody who lived in basically Stratford but went to London when they had to do so for work. His work in London would have been as an actor. And we do know that he had lodgings in London. We know how that he had several different lodgings in London, which suggests that he never really put down roots there. His roots were in Stratford. From 1597, he owned the biggest house in Stratford. His wife and family remained in Stratford with no evidence that they ever went to London. He would have travelled from London to Stratford by horseback. He could have travelled inland. He could have spent all land here because the theatres were closed then. He could have come here at other times. And there is recently discovered evidence that his actors, fellow actors, actually let him off, sometimes from acting in order to pursue his work as a playwright, because he was.. that was what brought them their main profit, his writing. In the last three years of his life, unquestionably, he was primarily a Stratfordian. He said, we have no evidence that he wrote anything from 1613 onwards, 1613 is the globe burnt down, which I think would have been a traumatic event for him. But before that, too, I believe he was a Stratfordian.
