Practice Listening: Summarize Spoken Text ID: #30112 Medium Emotion 2
Instructions
There were two very different ideas about what should happen when someone tries hard. They have an emotion, but they try hard not to show it. Here's one idea, one idea is that the expression of emotion is so much part of what it means to have an emotion, that if you bottle up the expression, the emotion sort of withers away. That's how important the expression is. You turn off the expression and the emotion just sort of disappears. So, that's one idea, and I'm not making this up, it's really in the literature. And there's this idea that this is what happens for sure, you just sort of take the emotion off your face and the whole thing disappears. So, if you turn down the behaviour, you're going to turn down the experience. You're going to turn down the physiology because everything travels together, that's idea number one. Sounds reasonable. And then there's this other idea which I also read about, and that's the idea that underlies a lot of health psychology. That's the idea of sort of the opposite, if you deny expression to emotions on your face. It's going to bubble up in other channels. So, far from everything going down together, like the other idea. Now the idea’s that you turned down your expressions. What happens to everything else? It goes up! Because you're denying. You're denying expression in this channel and then it bubbles up. Bubble.. Bubble.. Bubble.. and your blood pressure goes up and everything.
