We might think that we know what we want in the future, but actually, it’s not always true. In fact, psychologists Gilbert and Wilson believe we are poor at predicting what will make us happy in the future. An experiment that shows this, is one where two groups of participants got free sandwiches. One group had to choose which sandwiches they wanted for an entire week in advance. The other group got to choose what they wanted each day. An interesting thing happened, people who chose their favourite sandwich at lunchtime each day often chose the same sandwich and yet this group turned out to be reasonably happy with its choice. The people who chose their sandwich in advance predicted what they would want for lunch, and chose different sandwiches. But they were much less happy with their choices than the 1st group.
