Three students are considering forming a new debate club on campus. Jake (Student) I've been thinking its high time we had a proper debate club again. I love public speaking, and its such a great skill for everyone, whether you're studying law, politics, or even science. If we do it right, we can create a space for people to practise without feeling intimidated. Tom (Student) I get what you're saying, Jake, and I'm not against it. It's just that I'm already juggling classes, part-time work, and another club. I'm not sure I can take on something new unless we're clear about how much time it'll actually take. Weekly meetings are fine, but anything more might be too much for me. Ruby (Student) For me, the appeal lies in competition. I'm all for building confidence, but I really want us to aim for actual debate tournaments. There's a calendar of inter-university competitions we could work towards. If we only focus on casual discussions, we might miss out on that opportunity. Jake (Student) That's fair, Ruby. Maybe we can find a balance start with a casual tone to build numbers and confidence, but gradually prepare a core team for competitive events. We'd need a faculty advisor to support us, though. It's part of the club registration process anyway. Tom (Student) I'm okay with that as long as the expectations are clear. Maybe we could run an initial interest survey to see how many people are looking for competitive debates versus just improving their speaking skills. That way we build the structure around actual demand. Ruby (Student) Good idea. And let's not forget funding. Travel, registration fees, maybe even printing flyers it all adds up. We'll need to look into funding applications, either through the student union or external sponsors. But we can’t request anything until we’ve got a proper club structure in place. Jake (Student) Exactly. So here's a plan: we organise an initial interest meeting for next Wednesday, open to all students. We explain our goals, collect survey responses, and invite a few potential faculty advisors to attend. That'll show we’re serious and help move the process forward. Tom (Student) Sounds manageable. I can design a simple digital flyer and help promote it online. Once we've got some momentum, I'm happy to help coordinate meeting times and draft the weekly schedule provided it fits around other student events. Ruby (Student) And I'll start reaching out to the debate council for their tournament schedule so we know what's coming up. Between the three of us, we've got a strong foundation. Let's get through next Wednesday's meeting and then focus on selecting an advisor and submitting our registration.
